Time and patience are called for
2003-11-19 @ 4:13 p.m.

In the four and half years I have worked with this agency, we have gotten a small handful of calls from birth mothers or hospital social workers about placing a newborn for adoption. Only one mother from this area has actually gone through with placing her baby for adoption. Last week, my boss and the office manager took an infant from a local hospital to one of the agency foster homes up north. How that case will play out is not quite certain yet. Today, I got a call from a social worker from another local hospital about another mother wanting to place her baby. This is really pretty weird.

It just feels like a weird day today. An old client is coming back. I guess that isn’t uncommon enough to call it weird, but it isn’t an everyday thing either. Maybe things are turning around. Maybe I will get a call for an interview to be a drug rep. Maybe I will win the lottery. Maybe the fortune I got in my cookie the other day was right –“Time and patience are called for many surprises await you!” It’s funny how fortunes don’t seem to have the right punctuation.

The office manager and I went for Chinese on Monday. As we went into the restaurant, she commented on how she thought I had changed. She marveled at how I would drive across a couple states to fuck some guy (her words—not mine) and then drive home. That’s not exactly what happened, but I agree that it was still a rather daring thing for me to do. Something that I wouldn’t have done a year ago. Something that now seems a lot like a dream.

Maybe it isn’t just today. Maybe life is just weird and I am finally accepting that you can never predict exactly how it will go.

Love to all.
