2003-09-12 @ 4:36 p.m. Well, it’s quite evident that nothing goes on around here. A new big grocery store opened up on Wednesday and I think that the place has been packed since it opened the doors at 8 AM. I suppose I should not criticize since I was as excited about this store as anyone. It’s not a Wegmen’s (I think that only Lotus will understand that) or anywhere close to a Central Market (Maddy), but it’s as close as this town will probably ever come. I have gone twice. The first time was purely a scouting visit. I went in and walked around for half an hour and left without buying a thing. I went again yesterday to pick up something for lunch. I only bought a couple of things because I just didn’t want to try to maneuver a cart through that mess. I should try to go at midnight sometime because then I might actually have a chance to see everything. I hate crowds. So, I was reading Oprah magazine last week. It’s probably not cool, but I like Oprah. I would like her better if she stayed grounded in reality and did not recommend all this stuff that is out of reach for the lower middle class, but that’s neither here nor there. In an interview with her and Salma Hayek (who I also like) at the J. Paul Getty Museum (I got excited about that since I was just there in July), they talked about how they both had made it happen. Oprah said something to the effect of the universe doesn’t respond to desperation. I’m enjoying that idea sifting through my mind like soft sand. I think it’s true. I mean I think in general, you get what you need when you need it, but truly great stuff doesn’t happen when you are desperately grasping for it. I think that the really great stuff like true love and success sneak up on you while you are thoroughly enjoying your life otherwise. I think I’m doing that lately—just trying to savor moments and not worry about later. I guess that’s it for now. I hope everyone has a great weekend. Maddy, I’ll be at my parents’. Love to all.
